Many international students assume IELTS is mandatory for UK university admission — it is not. In 2026, a growing number of UK universities accept alternative English proficiency evidence, making study in the UK more accessible than ever.
Universities That Accept Duolingo English Test
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is now accepted by over 80 UK universities, including Coventry University, Northumbria University, and University of Hertfordshire. A score of 105–115 typically meets undergraduate entry, while 120+ is required for most postgraduate programmes. The test costs around £49 and results are available within 48 hours.
PTE Academic as an Alternative
Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) is widely accepted as an IELTS substitute. Universities including the University of East London, University of Salford, and London Metropolitan University accept PTE scores of 51–58 (equivalent to IELTS 6.0). PTE is computer-based, results arrive in 5 business days, and the test fee is around £170.
TOEFL iBT Acceptance
TOEFL iBT is accepted at virtually all UK universities. A score of 72–79 is generally equivalent to IELTS 6.0, and 87–93 equates to IELTS 6.5. Russell Group universities such as King's College London and the University of Edinburgh accept TOEFL for both undergraduate and postgraduate entry.
Universities With Internal English Tests
Some universities conduct their own in-sessional or pre-sessional English assessments. Anglia Ruskin University, University of Bedfordshire, and University of Wolverhampton offer conditional offers where students complete a 6–10 week English preparatory course on arrival. This route suits students who missed external test scores but can demonstrate competency in person.
Medium of Instruction (MOI) Letters
If you completed your last qualification — degree, A-levels, or foundation — fully in English, most UK universities will accept a Medium of Instruction letter from your previous institution. This applies to students from India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Ghana, Kenya, and other English-medium education systems. The letter must be on official letterhead and signed by a registrar or academic officer.
Graduate Entry Routes
Students applying for postgraduate study who have a UK undergraduate degree automatically satisfy English language requirements. Similarly, applicants who have lived and worked in the UK for 3+ years may be exempt. Always confirm specific entry requirements with the university admissions office or speak with an LSOE advisor.
LSOE helps you identify the right pathway. Our advisors will match you to universities that accept your English qualification — at no cost to you.
